XTR33MY - IBM BladeCenter H Workshop

Course outline

1 day

Duration

1 day

Course Description

This course builds on the skills gained from the BladeCenter Fundamentals course (XTR30), which focused on BladeCenter chassis servers, how they communicate with each other, and their redundancy. This one day class builds on those skills by placing emphasis on the BladeCenter H itself: its unique components, power and cooling, midplane connections, and systems management. The next topic will discuss the high-speed infrastructure and the options that are available. Open Fabric Manager is discussed to help you get the most from your I/O followed by showing the sequence of events in a Blade failover and recovery. The last section covers those important elements regarding installation and the associated tools. The lab environment includes the BladeCenter H environment, a review of the Advanced Management Module (AMM), and the BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager, known as BOFM.

Audience

This is an intermediate course for those individuals involved in the planning, installation, configuration, and upgrading of IBM BladeCenters.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the major elements of the IBM BladeCenter H chassis by identifying those elements that are unique to that chassis
  • List and describe the cooling and power elements of the BladeCenter H
  • Using the AMM, list the systems management elements
  • List the high-bandwidth chassis elements in the BladeCenter H
  • Match the intra-chassis routing paths to I/O modules
  • Describe and list the high-bandwidth components and options
  • Match blade expansion cards with supporting I/O modules
  • List the fibre channel and networking protocols supported
  • List the features implemented in the BladeCenter Open Fabric Manager
  • List the storage and networking definitions that can be modified
  • Match configuration steps to the chassis elements affected
  • List the sequence of events that occur in blade failover and recovery
  • Prepare for a BladeCenter H installation by understanding the core questions to consider, especially related to the power and cooling requirements and listing the available problem determination tools
  • Review basic AMM Web navigation for display and control of chassis components
  • Identify AMM BladeCenter functions available through the Web interface
  • Simulate the physical removal and replacement of a blade server using the AMM BOFM definitions to logically swap blade bays
