PW32MY-IBM WebSphere Portal Version 5.1 Administration

Reference course outline

2 days

Overview

In this hands-on lab course, learn how to perform the day-to-day administrative tasks for IBM WebSphere

Portal V5.1. Develop the necessary skills for an administrator, architect, or developer to administer

WebSphere Portal. Portal administrators see how to perform such tasks as portlet deployment, portal page creation, document management using Document Manager and Web Content Manager, configure Virtual

Portals and many other administrative tasks. Also, discuss approaches involving portal design and implementation.

This course does not cover programming of portlets nor does it cover the administrative task of installation of the base IBM Portal Server product. These skills can be obtained by attending the appropriate WebSphere

Portal Developer or other administration courses.

Administrative skills to install and deploy WebSphere Portal server can be obtained by attending:

IBM WebSphere Portal Version 5.1 Installation and Deployment (PW311CE) or

IBM WebSphere Portal Version 5.1 Installation, Deployment, and Administration (PW331CE)

PW331CE is a combination of topics from the PW311CE and PW321CE.

Course Materials

The course material exposes the portal architect or administrator to the processes and practices for administration of WebSphere Portal V5.1.

Hands-On Labs

Seven labs are included to address the skills transfer of the portal architect or administrator to the processes and practices for administration of WebSphere Portal V5.1.

Audience

This is an intermediate course for IBM clients, independent software vendors, systems integrators, and IBM technical staff members, including administrators, architects, and developers who implement portal solutions built on the IBM WebSphere Portal platform.

This unit describes the three methods available for an administrator to configure the WebSphere Portal runtime: administration portlets, wpscript and XMLAccess.

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

describe the different ways of administering the portlet identify what tasks the administrative portlets support discuss how to run wpscript and XMLAccess commands contrast the features of the three administrative tools and identify when each should be used explain the high-level composition structure of XMLAccess scripts

:: Course PW32MY ::

Portal page management

This unit explores how to create and manage the portal page hierarchy using the Graphical User Interface

(GUI) administrative tools, such as the Manage Pages portlet.

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

explain the concept and purpose of themes and skins discuss what the page navigation structure is, and how to build it identify the behavioral difference between root nodes and regular nodes use the Manage Pages portlet to create and manage a navigation structure consisting of labels, pages, and Uniform Resource Locators (URL) discuss the different page configuration options that are available place portlets on a page use XMLAccess to export/import page configurations

WebSphere Portal Scripting interface

This unit discusses how to use the WebSphere Portal Scripting interface (wpscript).

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

describe what administrative functionality is provided by wpscript understand the syntax of wpscript use the wpscript facilities to get help on using the interface use wpscript to interact with and modify the WebSphere Portal navigation hierarchy run preprovided scripts that allow for automated, repeatable administrative tasks to be performed

Portlet administration

This unit discusses what portlets are, how to install them, and how to manage them using the administrative portlets.

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

describe a portlet explain the packaging and deployment mechanism discuss what occurs during the installation process and the different locations where the code files are placed explain how to activate/deactivate and copy a portlet application describe what occurs when a portlet application is updated discuss the importance of the portlet.xml and web.xml deployment descriptors

WSRPs

This unit describes how to expose a portlet using the WSRP interface and the steps necessary to consume a portlet that has been exposed through WSRP.

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

describe WSRP and where it should be used expose a portlet using WSRP

:: Course PW32MY ::

consume a portlet that has been exposed through WSRP discuss the different options for enabling security for portlets exposed through WSRP describe where WSRP fits into the portal architecture
