Machinery and Electrical Safety

Course outline

2 days

Duration

2 days

Overview

Many of the injuries in the workplace occur due to machines which are dangerous in condition or not well maintained. In improving the yield of their productivity, some employers tend to push the usage of machines to such an extent that it causes injuries to the users. However, it should be clear that the production will automatically improve if the machines are maintained in a safe manner. The objective of this course is to make sure the employers as well as employees are aware of requirement of the Factory and Machinery Act ( Fencing of Machinery and Safety ) Regulations 1970

Apart from the above, the operator of a machine should also be made known to recognize mechanical hazards in the workplace. One of the every important requirement is to ensure that the operator knows the importance and the use of the safeguards or generally referred as machinery guarding. It is also important that the participants be aware of the different kinds of hazards associated with machinery safety. Equally important is the understanding of the limitations of such safeguarding.

Every workplace has the need for ongoing maintenance. Installation, repair, and servicing of machines and

equipment which may seem routine, but can be dangerous to employees performing the work. Serious injury can be caused by the sudden and unexpected startup of the machinery or equipment, contact with live electrical circuits or the unexpected release of stored energy. Equipment that has been shut down may inadvertently be re-started or re-energized by a co-worker, or equipment that was thought to be shut down may be controlled by automatic processors, timers, or computers and re-start automatically and without warning. Failure to control electrical hazardous energy sources can results in severe injury and even fatality. Fortunately, these hazards can be avoided through the compliance of electrical safety rules and regulations including the use of lockout/tagout procedures. The participants will be explained in details the consequences of not complying with the legal requirements such as ( 1 ) the obligation of the employer according the section 15 of the OSH Act 1994 and the Factory and Machinery Act ( Fencing of Machinery and Safety ) Regulations 1970.

Persons undergoing this training will have in depth knowledge of the legal requirement, the use of various machinery guarding and the accident preventive measures. They also will contribute to the generation of work instructions related to process involving machinery.
