Introduction to Storage Networking
Purpose
This two-day lecture class is designed to introduce technologies, SAN products, topology, and terminology associated with storage networking. It introduces current basic concepts, terminology, and standards associated with networked storage: storage area networks (SANs), network attached storage (NAS), and internet iSCSI (iSCSI). It explains what you probably already have installed in your enterprise so that documentation and information resources for your installation will make sense. The IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) and SAN management are also introduced at a conceptual level. This course is designed to provide a firm foundation for continuing study or experience in any storage networking environment. It provides prerequisite knowledge for IBM and other course offerings.
Audience
Anyone who needs a general introduction to the storage networking environment.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of IT and storage systems technologies.
Objectives
After completing this course, you should be able to:
Understand fundamental terminology relating to storage networking
Be familiar with standards organizations and their role pertaining to storage networking
Define Fibre Channel architecture, data transfer protocols, nodes, ports, fabric, switches, directors, hubs, and routers
Correlate direct-attached storage (DAS), NAS, iSCSI, SAN, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) storage networking architecture and possible usage scenarios
Identify resource access and sharing options and considerations associated with SAN product overview
Illustrate the usage of the SAN fabric components including Fibre Channel host bus adapters, switches, and directors in establishing a SAN environment
Relate the role of the SAN virtualization including the IBM SVC in virtualizing and provisioning storage resources from the SAN to attaching host servers
Describe SAN management at a high level
