Course Overview
While this course includes IBM i 6.1 content, it is suitable for those currently using prior versions of IBM i.
Learn to better understand the techniques of performance analysis of systems and partitions running IBM i. Increase your knowledge on how the IBM i operates and interfaces with applications. Acquire the skills to better manage performance on the systems and partitions running IBM i. Enhance your knowledge of the IBM i concepts, including the Technology Independent Machine Interface (TIMI), main storage pools, auxiliary storage pools, management of jobs/threads and tasks, job run time structure, performance data collection, monitoring and analysis using various facilities within the performance tools product.
New IBM i 6.1 and POWER6 topics include discussions on multiple virtual shared processor pools and the benefits of configuring dedicated processor partitions to donate processor capacity. An introduction to using the new browser-based interface for performance analysis on IBM Ii 6.1 through IBM System Director Navigator for i5/OS has also been added. The course includes an introduction to Disk Watcher and Job Watcher data collection and review.
The section on Logical Partitioning discusses the use of capped and uncapped modes, virtual shared processor pools and processor donation of dedicated processor capacity. The course includes micro-partitioning performance considerations and techniques for reviewing IBM i performance data in a Dynamic LPAR environment.
Apply tools and methodology of performance tuning IBM i environments through hands-on exercises. The hands-on lab exercises (based mainly on IBM i 6.1 data but also include prior version considerations) focus on a review methodology using Performance Tools for i5/OS License Program Product and IBM System Director Navigator for i5/OS. The labs show how you can extract a wealth of performance information from the performance database files to satisfy performance analysis need, and how to easily create your own graphs for inclusion in management reports. A method to analyze run time of jobs using "wait buckets" created by Collection Services will help you understand ways to improve performance. The wait analysis considers IBM i version including and prior to 6.1.
